As I did last week, I share with you the prayer we will be using for the Fourth Sunday of Advent in The Beginning Prayer Service. Join us in praying that these final days of preparation before Christmas will be spent in ways that builds up the body of Christ on earth, the Church.

A Prayer for Advent

As God has called out to common people through the ages, and asked them to serve in ways great and small, so are we called to fill that roles ordained by our Creator. Give us, Lord, the courage and commitment to accept whatever you would have us to do, with grateful hearts full of the knowledge that your strength is sufficient for our tasks.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Grant us humility when we see others, even some whom we may feel less worthy than ourselves, in positions of prominence and power while we are relegated to more obscure roles.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Prevent us from being full of pride when our roles are large and help us to see that, despite whatever talents we may possess, we are destined for failure if we do not firmly rely upon you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Above all else, we humbly pray, grant us such a sense of commitment to you and to the world you have created, that we will do whatever you ask in carrying the good news of your love to those for whom Christ lived and died.

Let us accept your guidance over the paths of our lives, going where you would have us to go, doing what you would have us do, all in the name of and by the power of the one who taught us to pray, saying, “Our Father…
