Hiking locations for each Saturday of the month

1st Saturday: Gwinnett Environmental Center

2nd Saturday: Settles Bridge Park

3rd Saturday: Jones Bridge (Chattahoochee River)

4th Saturday: Simpsonwood Park

5th Saturday (January, April, July, and October in 2022): Red Top Mountain, Iron Hill Trail

Every Saturday, we will meet at 8am and 10am at the assigned location. Kristy Engel will lead the 8am hikes and Marcy Jenkins will lead the 10am hikes (again, at the same location). Feel free to join either time. On the 5th Saturday hike, there will only be a single time (9am) as it is a longer drive. It’s always helpful if you let Kristy and Marcy know if you will be joining but it is not required. The hiking group will leave the parking lot no later than 5 min after the scheduled time so if you are planning on joining the hike, please attempt to arrive on time.

Finally, Shorty Howell Park will be the rain location for any hike that would be too muddy due to the weather. We will let you know on Friday evening if the location is being changed to Shorty Howell. Light rain, cold, snow, and other minor weather will not cancel the hike but might change the location to Shorty Howell as they have fully paved trails. Unless otherwise informed, we will also hike on holiday weekends unless Saturday is the actual holiday (as in Christmas 2021 and New Year’s Day 2022). In that case, there will not be a scheduled hike.

Below, you will find the addresses for each trail’s parking lot as well as the length of the trail, whether it is paved/unpaved, if dogs are allowed, cost for parking, and if there are other things to do at that location (like a playground or picnic tables). You can download the free app, AllTrails, to find more information about each trail, pictures, length, etc.

1st Saturday:
Gwinnett Environmental Center
2020 Clean Water Dr, Buford, GA 30519

Parking is free, dogs welcome on a leash, partially paved out and back trails (3 – 5 miles).
There is a zipline park, picnic tables, benches along the trail, and the Environmental Center
building that can be visited during operating hours. Bathrooms are located along the trail.

2nd Saturday:
Settle’s Bridge Park
380 Johnson Road, Suwanee 30024

Parking is free, dogs welcome on a leash, 2.5 miles paved and unpaved trail (the loop is a
combination). If you want paved only, you could loop the paved sections.
There is a skate park, several playgrounds, dog park, basketball court, bathrooms, and benches.
If you go beyond the main park area, there is a boat launch for canoes and kayaks.

3rd Saturday:
Jones Bridge Trail (Chattahoochee River)
8615 Barnwell Rd, Johns Creek, GA 30022

Parking costs $5/day or you can purchase an annual pass for $40 HERE. American the Beautiful
passes are also valid at this location and can be purchased at the same site, above. Dogs are
welcome on a leash, approximately 5 miles of unpaved trails with some incline in areas,
bathrooms located in the parking lot only, access to fishing and a boat launch, and picnic tables.
The trail has a lot of roots so please wear sturdy shoes. This is an out and back trail.

4th Saturday:
Simpsonwood Park
4511 Jones Bridge Cir NW, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092

Simpsonwood Park is a non-paved loop trail with bathrooms near the parking area as well as
some picnic tables and benches throughout. There are a lot of exposed roots on the narrow
path, so it is a good idea to wear sturdy shoes. Many deer can be seen throughout the year.
Parking is free and dogs are welcome on a leash.

5th Saturday (January, April, July, and October in 2022):
Red Top Mountain, Iron Hill Trail
Red Top Mountain Road SE, Acworth, GA 30102
(GPS coordinates: 34.139550, -84.700383 //  N34 08.373 W84 42.023)

There is a $5 fee for parking that can be paid online, or an annual Georgia Parks pass can be
purchased for $50 ($25 if you are over 62 y.o.), here. You can also pay on arrival. If you
purchase an annual pass online, it will take 7-10 business days to arrive. The trail is very well
maintained and circles Allatoona Lake for about 4 miles. It is also a mountain bike trail. Dogs are
allowed on leash. Parking can fill up on nice days so it’s a good idea to get there early. Along the
well-maintained trail there are a few benches, and you can walk down to some small beach
areas along the lake if you’d like. There are no bathrooms unless you drive to the visitors center
down the road from the trailhead. At the visitor’s center there is more parking and the
Homestead trail if you would also like to hike that trail.
You will have to watch for the entrance to the trail parking as it is located along Redtop
Mountain Road on your left before you get to the visitor’s center, camping area, or the turn for
Websters Ferry Landing Road. If you pass Websters Ferry Landing Road, then you’ve gone too

Inclement Weather Alternate:
Shorty Howell Park
2750 Pleasant Hill Rd, Duluth, GA 30096

When weather has been especially wet, we will meet at Shorty Howell Park and walk the paved
trail. Notification will be sent out on Friday evening if the location is changed.
The meeting point for the hike will be in the parking lot next to the football field. Follow the
road to the very end, past the softball and baseball fields and you will see the football field. This
is a fully paved loop trail with free parking and dogs are welcome on a leash. There is a short
track that surrounds the football field and can choose to walk that section only. Shorty Howell
has bathrooms in two locations: one by the football field and one by the playground area.
There is a mulch trail that parallels one section of the paved trail for some variety. The park has
many benches and picnic tables along the trail as well as playground equipment and an exercise
circuit located near the shelter area.
