Hope in the New Year
In “How Can I Keep from Singing,” (Celebrating Grace Hymnal, #592) Robert Lowry wrote:
My life flows on in endless song.
Above earth’s lamentation
I hear the real though far off hymn
That hails a new creation.
And then comes his memorable refrain:
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that Rock I’m clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
The Hymary.org Bulletin Blurb for this hymn says simply:
This hymn is all about perspective. It opens with an assertion that the troubles of this world are nothing when compared to the new creation that is to come. By keeping our focus on our Lord – that He is our Rock and that He lives – we can follow the admonition of the apostle James: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds” (James 1:2 ESV).
This New Year may Lowry’s fourth verse also be on our hearts and minds:
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his!
How can I keep from singing?
