Didn’t You Know

Today is Boxing Day!  Traditionally, Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) was a time when Lords and aristocrats offered Christmas boxes to their servants and staff, like a Christmas bonus.  It was also a time in the church when clergy would take the alms boxes that parishioners had contributed to throughout Advent and give them to those in need. Today it really is just a time for shopping and boxing up Christmas.  Christmas Day is over, the world has moved on. We have had our Silent Night.  The Messiah has come.

We are told that after Jesus was born Mary pondered what had happened and treasured all these things in her heart. When Jesus was just a boy his parents took him to the Passover in Jerusalem. When they had all packed up and headed home, they realized Jesus wasn’t with them.  After three days of searching, Jesus’ parents finally found him in the Temple. They asked him why he would do that to them, because they had been so worried.  To which he responded, “Didn’t you know I was in my Father’s house?”

Again, we are told that Mary pondered what had happened and treasured up all these things in her heart. We spent a lot of time preparing for the coming of the Christ.  Now that he has come, I wonder, have you spent time treasuring up all these things and pondering them in your heart?

Don’t move on with the world this Boxing Day.  Free yourself of distractions and truly reflect on the coming of Christ.  You need time to reflect, to ponder.  You need to spend time with Jesus because there might come a time when we find ourselves traveling down a road and realize that Jesus is not there, and we need to know where to go to find him.

We need to know.

Didn’t you know?

Grace and Peace,
