Hymns Used in 2017

This past liturgical year, November 27, 2016 to November 26, 2017, I began keeping track of the hymns we sing at Parkway Baptist on a spreadsheet. In previous years I have kept track of the hymns we sing using a hymnal. It may seem like a sacrilege for a librarian to mark in a book, but one common way Ministers of Music keep track of hymns used in worship is to designate one hymnal for record keeping. Accordingly, when a hymn from the congregation is used in worship, the date of that hymn’s use is entered on that hymn’s page. In this way, a record of hymns used is all in one place.

This is a great system to keep track of what hymns are used and how often each hymn is sung. With this system, it is easy to see each, individual hymn’s frequency of use over time. For example, looking in the record keeping hymnal, I see we sang Amazing Grace twelve times since May 2014. However, it is hard to get an overview of all the hymns used in one year using this system. To do that, you would have to go through the entire hymnal, all 707 items, and note the hymns used in the year in question.

Enter the spreadsheet. With the count and sort features of a spreadsheet, it is easy to get an overview of hymns use in a given year. With all that said, here is some interesting data on the hymns we sang in the 2017 Liturgical Year.
