Christmas In August

On Saturday, August 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. we will hold our Annual Christmas Music Workshop. During this time, we will get a head start on learning the musical to be presented for morning worship on Sunday, December 17.

As in past years, we are encouraging all singers interested, high school aged and up, to join us for Christmas Choir. Here is how it works. First, your attendance is encourage at the Annual Christmas Music Workshop on Saturday, August 26. Next, join us on Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 7:40 p.m. to rehearse. We will rehearse Christmas music first to accommodate our Christmas Choir singers. At 7:40 p.m. Christmas singers are gladly dismissed. It is a great way to participate in choir without fully committing to year round choir.

The musical we will present this year is entitled, A Festival of Lessons and Carols by Hal H. Hopson. It features a group of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas carols wonderfully and artfully arranged for mixed choir, congregation, organ, string quartet, percussion, and handbells. (Please don’t tell Jim King there is a handbell part!) (Does Carey not know I proof these articles before they’re published? – JK)

The service follows the traditional Lessons and Carols format begun in England at the Truro Cathedral on Christmas Eve in 1880. Some 38 years later, in 1918, this format was adapted for the Christmas Eve service at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, England. The BBC broadcast of this service helped popularize the service and it is still popular today.

The Annual Christmas Music Workshop will be held in the Music Room at Parkway. At 8:30 a.m. coffee, juice, donuts and bagels will be available in the Welcome Center .Rehearsal will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.
